Researchers and the Leggy Woman

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Despite what artists, fashion magazines, and country music lyrics have told us for ages, researchers now claim the majority of people feel long legs aren’t “all that”.

According to an article posted on Couriermail.com.au:

When researchers chose eight images and asked 705 women and 235 men to rate the attractiveness of each shape, five of the six focus groups rated women with longer legs less attractive.

The article went on to add:

They also did not prefer women with short legs, a body shape often associated with poor health.

I admit I’m surprised. As a woman whose legs are definitely not long, I have always assumed that I would have to accentuate other assets ;)  Well, I suppose I still do as I fall in the “short legs” category.  I’m not exactly sure why short legs signal poor health, but if the researchers say it’s so, well there you have it ;)

What about you?  Do you agree or disagree with the study’s findings?

I Always Knew You Were a 10! ;)

The folks at Apple have outdone themselves with their latest IPhone application, the Passion.  No longer will you have to wonder how well you are doing in bed – just strap on the IPhone and let the phones motion sensors and microphone work together to rate your performance.

According to US Post Today:

Users simply start the programme, strap the phone to their arm or belt, and press ’stop’ when lovemaking is over.

The programme then gives a rating from ‘bad’ to ‘perfect’ on three criteria – duration, activity, and orgasm.

Duration is monitored by the phone’s timer, activity through the ‘accelerometer’ motion sensor, and orgasm via the microphone.

All the readings are combined to created a score out of 10.

Users can then go online to upload the score and compare themselves against others who have done the same.

That eliminates the need for all that pesky communication, now doesn’t it?

Terrific Tush Tuesday and “Asstronomy”

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

sexy-cowgirl-f

Did you know the shape of a female’s tush reveals her personality? I read it in “The Sun”, a tabloid paper from the UK so I know it must be true ;)

In an article bearing the headline “Asstronomy“, Kate Jackson explains:

We asked Mark Bury, head of cosmetic surgery specialists SurgiCare, to explain six types of lady booty.

Those would apparently be round – honest, upside-down heart – moody, heart – emotional , flat – confident, shelf – works out, and boyish – happy-go-lucky.

Well there you go fellas.  Can’t figure out women?  Just keep looking at our hineys and you’ll understand us better.  “But honey, I was just appreciating her personality!”

Then we got Leeds “rumpologist” Sam Amos – a clairvoyant whose methods include doing psychic readings by studying clients’ bottoms – to reveal how shapes can reflect the owners’ personalities.

Rumpologist? That’ll keep me laughing the rest of the day.

michael-jackson1

I know there’s been controversy for years surrounding Michael Jackson and I’ve never known what to believe about it all. The only thing I know for certain is he was a cute little boy who could really sing and who brought a lot of musical happiness into my life when I was a young teenager. His death, as with Farrah’s, saddens me.

Rest in peace, Michael.

RIP Farrah

I sincerely doubt there is a single child of the 70s who hasn’t seen this poster.  Farrah was everywhere.  Young boys drooled and young girls dreamed of looking just like her.

Yes, I confess, along with all my friends, I was stricken with Farrah fever.  I had my very own feathered Farrah haircut (which if I remember correctly cost an obscene amount of money).  Somehow I didn’t look quite like her, but it didn’t matter – if I could change something to make me look more like Farrah in any way then in my mind I was more beautiful than I was before.  Naturally as I grew older, I put away such childish ideas.  Today I have no desire to look like anyone else as I can appreciate the unique beauty in everyone.

To my surprise I did recently find myself affected once again by this lady who was so much more than a physical beauty.  If possible, I hope that I can tap into my inner courage to battle whatever life throws at me in the same way Farrah did in her later years.

Whenever she discovered she had cancer, Farrah decided to make a documentary of her battle so that others might better understand this horrible disease and to give courage to those who may undergo the same fight.  Farrah’s Story was viewed by over nine million people when it aired and I’m sure will be viewed by many others via DVD and rerun. We watched as she underwent treatment, fought the horrible side effects, discovered her cancer had returned, and so much more. It was frank, powerful, heartbreaking, and inspiring.

Even though her sweet smile and feathered hair will be remembered by those of us who grew up in the 70s, her courage will be remembered by people of all ages for years to come.

Thanks for sharing, Farrah – you did make a difference. May you rest in peace.

Fox News Addresses Playboy’s Misogyny

Friday, June 5th, 2009

In my rant of yesterday, I mentioned my utter surprise that FOX News seemed to be silent on the issue of Playboy magazine’s reprehensible article.  While this appears to be accurate with regard to the FOX News website, the FOX News channel did have a response.

In case you do not have a spare 10 minutes to listen, allow me to share a few excerpts.   I’m pulling each snippet from a full conversation, so if you want the context, you’ll have to listen to the video.  I made every effort to be accurate, however since I am not a stenographer and am also a bit distracted by my temper, any quoted text in this post may contain one or two word errors.

  • FOX News Commentator 1:   Now isn’t being on the list kind of a compliment because he’s saying that although he despises your ideology, he’s obviously still wants to be with you?  (he does laugh after this remark, but I believe he is laughing at what Mary Catherine Ham is saying in response to his question and not at the absurdity of what he said.)
  • FOX News Commentator 1:   They could only do this list with conservatives, because they couldn’t come up with 10 on the other side.  It’s a fact.
  • FOX News Commentator 2:  Who uses terms like this except serial rapists, and it’s classic Hef, and I don’t know if he’s a serial rapist but he surrounds himself with you know these brainless, boob-enhanced sycophants who are probably too stupid to consent.

Oh thank goodness FOX News took a stand against misogyny.  I’m not sure what women would have done if they hadn’t.

I hope that I am mistaken, but it seemed to me that the FOX commentators were not too disturbed this was said about women in general, but that it was said about conservative women.   Perhaps they were simply reacting because some of the women on the list were their friends, but this didn’t seem to be a “fair and balanced” report to me.

FOX was able to obtain a statement from Playboy.  Andy Levy reports:

I did speak to Theresa Hennessey, the Vice President of public relations for Playboy Enterprises, Inc. and she sent me the following statement:

“Playboy has a long and proud history of supporting women’s organizations and has been an advocate of equal rights for women since its inception more than 55 years ago.  The feature on Playboy.com was by no means intended to insinuate or encourage violence against women, something the organization adamantly abhors.”

She told me the article was pulled because of the insinuation of violence.  I asked her well how did this slip through the editing cracks, you know, and she said it actually didn’t, it’s just that nobody realized it would be misinterpreted.

So I asked her since it was being misinterpreted what was it intended to be, as you just asked, Greg.  Uh, and she said it was intended to be a tongue-in-cheek article like they do with sexiest women sportscasters, etc., but when they realized it wasn’t coming across like that to a lot of people, they took it down.

Well thank you Playboy for the apology (insert sarcastic tone here).  If this article had not been interpreted to insinuate violence, it would have been perfectly acceptable?

Sigh.

Yes, I know that there is a good chance this article was published strictly to create buzz – a tactic ala the radio shock jocks. After all, they distributed press releases about this trash to some conservative media sources. Some say by writing about it I’m giving them the attention they seek. Perhaps that’s true, but I really could not remain silent. I’m stepping away now, though. I fear if I do not my blood pressure just might cause the top of my head to explode.

Herein Lies a Rant: Playboy vs Women

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

a234sd

It would seem that Guy Cimbalo, a writer for Playboy magazine, has a true fondness for women.  He recently penned a list of the “Top 10 Conservative Women We Hate to Love”.   Of course, by “Hate to Love”, Cimbalo was actually referring to the “Hate Fuck” (a phrase some are saying is a euphemism for rape).   This is the most misogynistic piece of writing I’ve seen in a long time.  What is wrong with people??  Why on earth would Playboy think it was acceptable to publish such a piece??

For years I have heard the debate over Playboy and other “men’s” magazines.  They exploit women.  No, they serve to celebrate men’s appreciation of women.   As far as I am concerned, Playboy has clarified their position with this article.

I would link directly to the Playboy site, but they have pulled the article after what appears to be massive protest.  Fortunately once you put something out on the internet, it will never truly disappear.  You may see screen shots of the entire article here.  You really must see the article to appreciate the vileness of it all.

Aside from the obvious, a couple of things really bothered me about this.

First is the apparent absence of mainstream media attention.  If you do a search for “Playboy” on the sites for CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX, you will find the following regarding this story:

  • CNN – nothing
  • MSNBC – nothing
  • CBS – one mention, a editorial by Connie Erbe.  Ms. Erbe makes it clear she is writing her editorial because “Teri Christoph, whom I have never met, asked me to stand up for conservative women who were maligned by an online article on Playboy magazine’s website.”   Wow.  No one has to ask me to stand up for women.  She goes on to say, “I also want to note that at least one woman on the list is so venom-spewing, she unfortunately invites venom to be shot back at her: Michelle Malkin. Her posts and her ‘routine’ are so venomous and predictable, in fact, I stopped paying attention to her years ago.”  Ok… if I interpret her response correctly, it would seem Ms. Erbe thinks Ms Malkin was asking for it???   Unbelievable.
  • ABC – Posted a video response from Elisabeth Hasselbeck, co-host of the View.  (Ms Hasselbeck was unfortunate enough to make this Top 10 list.)  If ABC, who employs Ms. Hasselbeck,  issued their own statement regarding this subject, I was unable to locate it.
  • FOX – nothing

Why wasn’t there more outrage?  I cannot believe FOX news  wasn’t all over this.  Isn’t such a vicious, misogynistic attack worthy of mention?  Perhaps they don’t want to give Playboy the attention, however calling attention to negative issues seems to be a pastime for the media.

Can you imagine the media frenzy (and rightfully so) had these remarks been racist in nature?

I’m also disturbed that one liberal news site initially published only the headline from Playboy’s article and the names of the women who made this list.   The article, written by Politico.com’s Anne Schroeder, was taken so seriously by this female writer that it was filed under the category “antics“.    (Schroeder’s original article was also pulled.   The result of protest?  My guess would be yes.)

Imagine what you would have seen on Politico and other liberal news sites had this list contained the names of famous liberal women.  I can’t say for sure that the response would be any different, but one does have to wonder.   What difference does it make if the women listed are conservative or liberal?  They’re human beings who do not deserve to be treated this way by anyone, much less a magazine that is the largest selling men’s magazine, selling about three million copies a month in the U.S.

I believe when magazines promote opinions like this, they help perpetuate misogyny.   Hate quite often leads to violence.  In the US there are 4.8 million intimate partner-related physical assaults and rapes every year.

No, Playboy is not responsible for all these things, but every pebble dropped in the pool of misogyny contributes to the problem.   With a circulation of three million, they certainly have influence.  While they withdrew the article, as far as I can determine there has been no apology, no clarification that Playboy does not support hatred or violence against women.

Isn’t it time we stood up to things like this and said, “No more!”  I for one am composing my letter right now.

In the News:

~ ~  Today is US Armed Services Day.   Thank you to all the service men and women who have fought to protect our freedoms.  You are the real heroes of our time.

~ ~ I’m at a bit of a loss with regard to the 50something Christchurch NZ man who was sentenced to nine months home detention for injuring two girls – ages 15 and 17 – in a BDSM session.   He’s being re-tried because the judge wouldn’t allow him to use the defense of consent, not just because of the girls’ ages, but because the injuries were semi-permanent.

First of all – nine months home detention for an SM session with a 15 year old???  Then to say the man can rightfully use the “they gave me fully informed consent” defense now??   What is wrong with people?   If he’d stolen someone’s car he would have undoubtedly been sentenced to more time than he received for engaging in SM with someone’s 15 year old child – and it would have no doubt been in prison, not his home.

About My Day:

~ ~ Earlier today when I was upstairs preparing to go out, Richard arrived to stay with Bill.  I must have been in the shower when he rang the doorbell because I wasn’t aware that he was already in the house.

I was standing in front of the mirror wearing only my panties, lamenting my decision to get my hair cut and trying to decide what to wear, when I remembered I’d left the camisole I wanted to wear in the clean laundry basket that was still sitting outside Bill’s bedroom door.  I hadn’t finished putting up the laundry when it was time to hop in the shower, so I just left it there to finish as I was waiting for my hair to dry.

Since Bill was downstairs and couldn’t come up without my help, I wasn’t too worried about fetching my camisole while I was dressed (or not dressed) as I was.  After all I knew I had the freedom to roam almost naked without being seen.

Just as I approached the laundry basket outside Bill’s bedroom Richard walked out.  He’d been in Bill’s room to retrieve something for him and thanks to the radio I hadn’t heard him in there.  My face was red, his face was red, and I stood there frozen for a second like some character in a Looney Tunes cartoon.  It’s funny how many thoughts can pass through your mind in a few seconds.  Should I say something?  Should I just turn and walk back to my room?  Would he be watching me all the way if I did?  After all, willingly walking around in front of someone wearing almost nothing is a whole different thing from accidentally doing it.

Gentleman and quick thinker that he was, he reached down, pulled a towel from the basket and held it out, all the while squeezing his eyes shut.  “This will never be mentioned again”, he promised as I turned and walked back to my bedroom.

I’ve been wanting to get to know Richard better and was even getting comfortable enough to consider letting him know more about me, but that was a bit farther than I had intended on going :)  Still, I got to know a lot about the sort of man he is from those few moments that seemed to last forever.  In spite of the embarrassment I felt, I liked what I learned about him.

Rest In Peace, Bettie
