Mosthandysub: I do have a profile on Fetlife, so I've tried it a bit. One of the primary focuses seems to be dating/relationships and even though my profile there indicates I am not looking for that, I receive a large amount of email from men who are. It takes a bit of time to respond to those emails, certainly more than I wish to devote to it.

Nigel: yes, exactly ;)

FTW: I can see the appeal to Facebook in that type of situation. If more members of my family were participants there I might enjoy it, but I'm not really interested in maintaining contact with people from high school.

Lethrs: I agree with what you said about Twitter. I'm not looking for another place to build a community. I think it might be fun just as a spot to occasionally pop off a remark or two about various things. I had not heard of Ning.

Arafin: Thus far I have enjoyed my time in Yahoo Groups, especially yours, so that will continue to receive the focus of any group/forum time I may have. I like skype as it is pretty much as good as talking on the phone - and sometimes better if calling overseas.

I belong to several Yahoo Groups, (and have left several more due to lack of activity on their part of lack of interest on mine). I enjoy reading and commenting on a number of blogs and I love Skyping with people. Although it costs a bit of money for a subscription I have found GoToMeeting.com to be great fun for audio parties. Lastly, I still engage in that most archaic of social networking techniques, ......... talking face to face. Living faces are wonderful. :)

So, this subject--and one I probably know more about than anyone should.

As far as social networks are concerned--you have to ask yourself what your goal is--and then find the network (or networks) that will fit that need.

Twitter is great for conversation, the tools (twitpic, twitcast etc) are great to build a network with. But its not a great community.

Ning does a great job with community building. Fetlife (which I concur requires a lot of time) is a great community--although I am not 100% sold on its ability to create networks.

Please let me know if you have specific questions etc.

I use Facebook largely because I have so many friends who use it, including people I haven't seen in 25 years. It's a way to keep in touch. In a way, it consolidates blog entries from all my friends, making it somewhat more convenient than chasing all their individual blogs.

I've never quite understood the allure of Twitter.

I have enjoyed using Fetlife and find it doesn't take any more time or effort than something like Facebook. It certainly seems like everyone with an interest in the scene is a member.

Try it...you might like it!
