Remembering those who served, especially those who paid the ultimate price so that we might enjoy our many freedoms, is not only the right and honorable thing to do, it can, if done deeply and skillfully enough, help to prevent future conflicts. And that is surely what all who serve in uniform want most. Just ask them.

Lady Julia, thanks for your simple, eloquent remembrance. I served in the US Navy for 4 yrs in the days of Vietnam and Prague Spring. Each veteran’s day, I hear endless speeches that do nothing but encourage the continuation of the patriot’s game, and each year I watch the young men fall in line with the sweet smell of duty and honor emanating from their young man bodies.
