As I begin this writing, it’s about 3 hours from Christmas. How did another year manage to pass by so quickly?

I ventured out early today on my annual “How can I still need gifts on Christmas Eve” shopping excursion. Even though I had a lot of company in the stores – a whole lot – and even though times around here are hard because several plants have shut down or laid people off, everyone seemed to be in a pretty good mood. I watched an older man offer to allow three different gift-laden women the opportunity to step in line in front of him at the checkouts. “Aren’t you the sweetest man?”, I remarked. “I’ll bet you’ve been that way since you were very young, haven’t you? Always a very good boy.” I’m not sure if the good boy reference made him flush or if it was simply being told he was sweet, but I enjoyed imagining it was a little of both.

Tonight we spent a quiet evening watching “A Christmas Story” and talking. Since we’re having our Christmas meal at a Chinese restaurant tomorrow, this movie is quite the appropriate pick. “Fa ra ra ra ra, ra ra ra ra” and all that :) (A comment that will only make sense if you’ve seen the movie.) A little earlier this evening I fixed a nice meal while dancing around the kitchen listening to Christmas music, including the above song. Yes, I was wearing red, and yes there were two men in aprons assisting me ;) These are things we’ve done every year for a few years now.

I like the little traditions we’ve established as a non-traditional sort of family. Bill has become a part of my family as has Graham. This year Richard has joined us. My mother accepts them as easily as she does her biological children, sweetly bossing them as she does all the rest of us. I can’t imagine why that bossy thing skipped a generation ;)

While I’d hoped to write more tonight, I’ll stop here. I have an offer to be chauffeured around so that I can look at more lights. Who could pass on that? :)
