“The freedom and happiness of man are the sole objects of all legitimate government.” – Thomas Jefferson
I think someone neglected to mention this to the New Orleans city government. No, I can’t get that story out of my mind.

A question:
Would the majority of the people in New Orleans be in favour of using the law in the way it is being used ?
If so, we are in real trouble as a race.
If not, there is hope that the situation will be rectified, leaving the pain of those so affected as the price for returning to sense.
Lady Julia,
Beautiful photo, love the trees in the foreground.
Dark silhouettes from the front, their orange yellow backs hidden :)

Hi Lady Julia:
As one enlightened human being to another I understand your concern for sexual freedom and civil liberties. Unfortunately there are forces in this country that would very much like to impose a Christian theocracy upon us reminiscent of Wahabi Islam . The are called “The Family” or “The Fellowship”. The rich of course will always have special dispensations granted to them. The poor will be ground up like so much dog meat. They are entrenched at the very highest levels of our government. Obama spoke at their “national prayer breakfast” last week. If you have not yet read “The Family” by Jeff Sharlet I highly recommend it. Here is a blurb about the family from Wikipedia:
The Fellowship, also known as the Family, is an international organization founded in 1935 and has been led by Douglas Coe since 1969. Its members include scores of high ranking U.S. government officials, corporate executives, heads of religious and humanitarian aid organizations, and non-U.S. leaders and ambassadors. It has been described by prominent evangelical Christians as one of the most politically well-connected fundamentalist organizations in the US
The core purpose of this group is to provide a private forum for public officials to hold Bible Studies, prayer meetings, worship services, or to share their troubles. In Newsweek, Lisa Miller writes that the common love for the teachings of Jesus binds this group together and all approaches to understanding him are acceptable.
The group is most widely known for organizing prayer groups throughout the United States and around the world, including the Presidential Prayer Breakfast, later renamed the National Prayer Breakfast. Every sitting United States president since 1953 has attended the event.
The Fellowship generally practices strict secrecy about its members or activities and eschews publicity and asks its members not to speak about the group; some members have denied that the Fellowship exists.
Jay,
Thank you for your comments on the photo. I bought a digital SLR on Thanksgiving and I’ve really been trying hard to improve.
And yes, I really loved the imagery there. It’s funny how easy it is to see something erotic in things that aren’t :)
As for the sex worker situation, I think most people wouldn’t agree with the way the law is being enforced there if they also were made aware of the resulting consequences.
HMP, I remember hearing about “The Family” during the last Presidential election. It does appear that they are politically connected, but I haven’t as yet found anything that reveals their direction interaction with any legislation. Have you?
Hi Lady Julia:
The Family are a shadow organization who deny their own existence so it is unlikely that anyone will find them directly tied to any piece of legislation. Nevertheless they wield tremendous influence in Washington and have unfettered access to the highest offices in the land. Douglas Coe, their leader, was George Bush’s spiritual adviser and as we know George’s decisions were frequently “faith based” so it is anyone’s guess how many of his policies were steered by their invisible hand. Recently gay rights organizations were up in arms because The Family are said to have close ties with the dictator of Uganda who recently proclaimed that gays in his country be jailed and put to death. They have a long history of inviting dictators to their National Prayer Breakfast.
The Family are all about influencing the course of events behind the scenes. I know it sounds like conspiracy theory stuff but it’s actually pretty well documented. I recommend Jeff Sharlet’s book highly. It is a very disturbing read.
