Discussing LOST With Me

February 23rd, 2010

There were a couple of people who indicated a desire to discuss LOST with me.  After thinking about it, I thought it might be fun to do conduct the conversation here.  We’ll do it in the comment section so we won’t spoil it for others who may be a bit behind.  I’ll be adding my thoughts after I watch each week’s episode, so don’t peek til you’ve seen the latest  one :)

I’ll start the comments by asking this… when Sayid was tortured by Dogen, did anyone besides me find it odd that Sayid was sort of.. well… whiny? Don’t get me wrong, I would have cried and screamed, etc, but Sayid’s character is a pretty tough macho kind of guy, not to mention he tortured people for a living!

  2. Mike says:

I thought the same thing. But obviously he was affected by dying. I think that has changed him in fundamental ways.

My question is, who is the child evil Locke was chasing?

  3. Mike says:

Another thought about Sayid dying. Resurrection is a big theme on lost. I think that they are going to show Sayid has been reborn as a new person. Whether the new person is all evil or all good is yet to be determined. :-) Hard to tell with the lost writers.

Regarding it seeming out of character for Sayid to be whining when he was being tortured, Mike said, “I thought the same thing. But obviously he was affected by dying. I think that has changed him in fundamental ways.” He went on to add, “Another thought about Sayid dying. Resurrection is a big theme on lost. I think that they are going to show Sayid has been reborn as a new person. Whether the new person is all evil or all good is yet to be determined. :-) Hard to tell with the lost writers.’

That’s true. Perhaps the whining was to make us wonder if he is the same person. If he’s evil now as Dogen said, then being a whiner doesn’t seem to fit. If he was reborn as a better person then are they saying being better makes one weaker? I think I read too much into this :)

Question – do you think Sayid is evil or is he simply someone who did what he thought was the right thing to do? And.. how many evil people are there who do that? Does that make them evil or crazy? Is anyone really all evil?

Mike said, “My question is, who is the child evil Locke was chasing?”

I heard someone suggest it was young Jacob but I think it could be the person who established this whole “Good”/”Evil” game that Jacob and Smokey (Locke/Smoke Monster) are playing, like maybe it is someone representing God?

From last week’s LOST: Why Rose is living in LA instead of New York where she lived before getting on the plane? And why is it that Locke apparently doesn’t hate his Dad for shoving him out the window and paralyzing him? At least it appears that way since he and Helen are inviting him to the wedding.

Why did the island sink? Because of the bomb?

Thoughts from Feb 23rd LOST – “Lighthouse”:

No, I am not SO big of a geek that I remember all this – I’m just a big enough geek that I took notes as I watched. Sue me :)

What’s up with SWT – (Sideways Timeline) Jack’s having an appendix scar he doesn’t remember? I almost forgot Juliet took out his appendix a couple seasons ago.

SWT-Jack has a SON? One who reads Lewis Carroll and is a Red Sox fan. What’s up with the Red Sox? Isn’t that the team from season two where Ben showed Jack the Others had contact with the outside world (Red Sox won the World Series)? Must be one of the writer’s favorite team. More importantly, who is David’s mom? I’m guessing Shannon. No logical reason. It would just make everything even more weird. Maybe it doesn’t matter about David’s mom. It seems like David is SWT-Jack’s way of having a relatively normal life, just like Helen and SWT-Locke.

And what is up with the Lighthouse? At first I thought it was a portal TO the island but it looks like it has more to do with it being a Looking Glass (ala Carroll)? Lots of Lewis Carroll and White Rabbit references throughout the series (including the key to David’s house being hidden under a stone rabbit.)

Hurley after Jack broke the mirrors in the lighthouse: “Thanks for the seven years of bad luck, man”. Like Hurley should be worried about MORE bad luck :)

Island Claire looks pretty good to have been alone in the Jungle for three years… a bit like Nell from the movie Nell. I wonder if she’s really evil or just crazy? What’s up with the “baby” that has the weird skull? Youch. Smokey-John is Claire’s friend? I wonder if her dad (and Jack’s) is still on the island?

Hurley is still the best character on the show. Absolutely adorable. “He (Jacob) turns up wherever he wants to like Obi-Wan Kenobi”.

We see the place where Jack chased Christian’s ghost, but still no Christian and no idea why Jack saw him there or why his body was missing.

Who is the bad person that is coming? Charles Widmore?

    Still more questions.

  5. Mike says:

    Did not see Lighthouse yet.

But I think Sayid is basically good. I think he feels he makes hard choices for the greater good.

I ask myself could I torture someone to save lives. Probably not. Does that make me a good person or a weak person. The old Jack Bauer dilemma.

  6. Lady Julia says:

EEEK. Did I ruin the episode for you?

I think I could torture someone to save people if I knew they knew something (as in “I know where the bomb is but I’m not going to tell you). Does that make me a bad person? I think torture is wrong, but if I knew they knew I would do it anyway. Is it wrong if it is a lesser wrong? Is it more wrong to let hundreds or thousands of people die?

Sometimes I miss philosophy class :)

Who knows what we can and can’t do. You probably could and I would probably would freak. Adrenalin and life experiences affects us all differently.

  7. Mike says:

It doesn’t bother me to know an episode before hand. In fact it is sort of like a tease. I am on the road. No time for television. Thank God for my DVR. I blast through the episodes.

I would torture to save lives. But probably be in therapy after that.

  8. rex says:

No need to publish my comment but I just wanted to say as someone who has never seen lost, reading these comments has me utterly perplexed and intriguied, but I have no earthly idea what the premiss of this show is.

  9. Mike says:

    Concerning the Lighthouse Episode.

It seems to me it is the epic struggle of good and evil. The evil Locke and Jacob have and are currently recruiting into their armies. Jacob has just been trying to maintain balance. Evil Locke is trying to tip the scales.

Both entities use similar tactics. Recruit people when they are vulnerable. Claire is not crazy. She has just been manipulated. Smoky used the grief of he child to shape her to his goals. And yes she looks good for three years on her own. Like he is using Sawyer’s grief of Juliette to manipulate him.

The Lighthouse was a way for Jacob and possibly smoky to observe candidates for the island.

One of the recurring themes in Lost is the difference between predestination and choice. I think that is part of the reason for the parallel time lines. It is showing the results of different choices we make.

One of the ideas from String Theory (theoretical physics) is that there are parallel dimensions and/or time lines to ours. Some people says this explains things like deja vu or past life regressions etc.

I think Jack will be the next chosen one. I stand by 100% by that choice until the next episode of Lost.
