In her latest movie, The Blind Side, Sandra Bullock plays Leigh Ann Touhy, a wealthy interior decorator from Memphis who, along with her Taco Bell franchise-owning husband Sean (Tim McGraw), brings a homeless teenager into their home and hearts. They love him, guide him, and nurture in him the family’s passion for football. This true story of Michael Oher (Quinton Aron), right tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, is a bit sappy but the acting is strong and the story line interesting.
I like Sandra Bullock – she’s cute, a bit quirky, and I usually feel really good after watching one of her performances. Her films aren’t high brow, but hey – sometimes I just want to relax and enjoy. I will also admit that I love sports movies (Hoosiers, Field of Dreams, Rudy, etc). Since I live in the South where sports for some is almost a religion, that type of story line would have made this a pleasant enough experience.
Even if you aren’t a sports person I think many of you will still appreciate Bullock’s character. So few movies feature a woman who is unabashedly strong and assertive without being bitchy. Leigh Ann Touhy is fierce when it comes to her family and she does things in that sweet, almost always smiling sort of way that’s woven into the fabric of so many strong Southern women’s personalities. At one point she tells a drug dealer, “If you so much as set foot downtown you will be sorry. I’m in a prayer group with the D.A., I’m a member of the NRA and I’m always packing.” She knows what she considers to be the right way of doing things – her way – and she isn’t shy about sharing that point of view with others.
If you’re a fan of strong, bossy, southern women, The Blind Side is a must see movie.

Yes, football stories are often up-lifting and the Ravens have had their own, on and off, field battles in recent times. Its good to see kindness and success over adveristy, which gives me hope for Human’s.
Lady Julia,
I’m glad you liked this movie, I went to see this movie with my Bride of 21 years Christmas day and giggled though the whole movie because for me, this is my life, Living with a strong southern lady that is submissive at times, kicks ass other times, loves to have her man submit to her both in and outside the bedroom, however hates wimpy men. Really enjoys putting male chauvinistic men in their place and making them look stupid. But yet is one of the hardest working people you will ever meet, and yet an extremely loving person. There have been times where she will chew someone up and spit them out, storm towards the door and stop, then wait for me to open the door for her. Or the times when she asks so submissively what my plans are on a particular day, only to have me explain to her in detail what I was planning to do, then have her smile like Sandra did in this movie and tell me what I was really planning to do that day. It really is funny because my Bride in real life is this character, however when we talked about it my Bride replied with, “You really think I act like that?” I don’t know if she is putting me on, or she really doesn’t think she is this way. It is a pleasure to be with a Lady like this and I am very fortunate to be love by her.
Wally
Wally, she sounds lovely :) I know quite a few ladies like that, but most don’t see themselves that way. Sometimes I think it’s difficult to see yourself as a dominant southern woman because much of our society says we’re not supposed to be that way. Personally, I think the things you said are high praise :)
Nigel, I think you hit the nail on the head – that’s why I love most sports movies, and sports for that matter.
You know, when I first saw this entry with the movie poster, I thought to myself, “Have I got the day wrong? Is this Terrific Tush Tuesday?” It has all the TTT requisite elements: male and female rear views (one or both of them attractive, depending upon taste). Alas, my day of the week reckoning was not in error. It is indeed Thursday. Yes, you may laugh.
